The Lady Maxwell Room is integrated into the rich history of Buittle Castle, and is named after Lady Maxwell (pictured below-left in William-Adolphe Bouguereau's 1890 portrait), a descendent of the medieval resident of Buittle Castle, Lady Devorguilla of Galloway. Lady Maxwell was a great supporter of the Arts and Crafts movement and aided in the founding of the National Trust for Scotland.
