On this page we are pleased to give you a taste of the various rooms we have available at the Castle.
Our B&B Rooms
Situated on the East range of the Castle Courtyard, each having its own entrance, these rooms are available for overnight stays or as part of an exclusive use booking.
The Lady Maxwell Room
Decorated in the Arts and Crafts style of William Morris, and named after Lady Maxwell who was a pioneer in the National Trust's building conservation and an ardent patroness of the Arts & Crafts movement, this lovely room, situated in the former Porter's room at the corner of the Courtyard, provides a wonderfully cozy and unique experience.
Exclusive Use Rooms
Further rooms at the Castle are available on an exclusive use basis or by prior arrangement - either for a group stay, or in connection with a private event. Please contact us about hiring any of these rooms for an event or stay.
The Entrance Hall
The Entrance Hall is the first room private guests would have come to. Today it serves as a multi-purpose room with seating areas for dining or reading. We had no information about how this room was historically decorated, and, having something of a free hand, the decision was taken to decorate this room in the Georgian Gothic Revival, or Strawberry Hill Gothic style, which is particularly favoured by James, the current Baron.
The Great Hall
Interestingly, the Great Hall at Buittle started out life as a Chapel - a replacement to the original Chapel of Ease built by Lady Devorguilla. During the reformation the chapel was dismantled and the room lengthened to serve as a new Great (or Laigh) Hall. It has been restored and redecorated with a nod to its ecclesiastical past, and, today, serves much the same purose - a public space where events are held, feasts put on, and ceremonies enacted. B&B guests will have a chance to see this impressive room during breakfasts at the castle.
The Chapel
The Chapel at Buittle, in full The Orthodox National Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, Undercroft, is the place where, through a small secret entrance to a diminutive room at the back of the current vaulted chamber, our forebears kept the Catholic Faith during times of persecution. Today, the whole of this room is used as the Castle's house chapel. It is a functioning Orthodox Shrine in the Western Rite tradition, and is regularly open to the public for private prayer and scheduled services. The chapel is available on a limited basis due to its function as a working church, so please contact us about the use of this space.
