The Chapel at Buittle Castle
The Chapel of Our Lady of Walsingham & Saint Martin, Undercroft is located in the historic barrel vaulted undercroft of the medieval tower. In addition to being the oldest currently used masonry on the castle premises, it is also the location of the Maxwell recusant chapel, where members of the Maxwell Family, during the reformation, had a secret chapel in which they could carry on their Roman Catholic worship without attracting the attention of the authorities.
Today it is host to the Orthodox Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham in Scotland. A local Orthodox Christian parish has services here every second Sunday, and, afterwards, has a luncheon in the Great Hall of the castle. All are welcome to attend these services as well as the luncheon afterward. As a courtesy, please let the parish know that you plan to attend, so that there is not a shortage of food! You can email them here to do this, or to find out more about the parish and the schedule of services.
