MAY 2021: RE-ESTABLISHMENT OF CHAPEL WITHIN THE BARONY

A chapel of ease has been at within the Barony of Buittle for hundreds of years, as well as a parish church. The reformation put an end to the Chapel of Ease at the Castle, and the Church of Scotland Parish, about a mile from the Castle was closed down some time ago, leaving the civil parish and Barony without a functioning place of worship.

In 2019, evidence of a recusant chapel was found at the west end of the vaulted undercroft of the tower. The decision was taken, at that stage, to re-institute the site as a chapel for the Castle and surrounding area. The above photo shows the completed installation. The chapel has proved a benefit to the residents and guests of the Castle itself, and has attracted many visitors, locally and from further afield.

Today the organisation is a Charitable Organisation of Chivalric Character with Sandor and Herta Margareta von Habsburg-Lothringen as Royal Protectors.
